land, and Cavanaugh Motors and Cris Craft, Salisbury. Also, Deer's
Head State Hospital, Salisbury; C. D. Bridell; McCready Memorial
Hospital; Crisfield Cap Company and Crisfield Sportswear, Crisfield,
and Princess Anne Shirt Company, in Princess Anne. The William
Hardester Insurance Company, of Pocomoke City, I am told, prefers
handicapped workers.

From this impressive list you will observe that handicapped workers
have found their place in many types of business—food, processing,
printing, chemical companies, education, insurance and many, many
others.

For the splendid service they have rendered in the overall effort to
stimulate employment of the handicapped I should like to recognize
also Chester Troy, the Chairman of the Governor's Committee; Mrs.
Ruth Darnell, the Executive Secretary of that Committee; Kenneth
Barnes, Director of the Vocational Rehabilitation Division of the
Maryland Department of Education, and J. Donn Aiken, Director of
the Maryland State Employment Service. I commend most heartily
all of you for the contribution you have made to this worthy cause.

PLANNING CONFERENCE

Dr. Lemkau, Dr. Abrams, Mr. Hallen, members of the Maryland
Association for Mental Health and the other sponsoring and cooper-
ating organizations, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:

I am deeply impressed and truly inspired by the wealth of talent and
the abundance of experience that have been brought together here
today to consider new methods by which the State of Maryland may
improve its programs for the prevention and treatment of mental dis-
orders. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to extend to you the
greetings of the people of Maryland as you assemble here for this
important conference.

I should like to begin by expressing my appreciation, and the
appreciation of the people of the State, to the members of the staff,
the members of the State Mental Health Planning Committee and to
all the others who had a hand in the preparation of the comprehensive
