McCambridge. All but three of these have moved on to better more
rewarding and more demanding jobs in industry. Mr. McCambridge,
it is a pleasure to present you this award as "Employer of the Year".
May I offer my sincere congratulations to both of you, Mr. Hutzler
and Mr. McCambridge, and may I express my personal gratitude and
the gratitude of the people of this State, for the spirit of benevolence
and good will which you and your companies have displayed in this
effort to improve the lot of the mentally retarded of our State.
REMARKS AT OPENING OF ROSSMOOR LEISURE WORLD
ROSSMOOR
September 9, 1965
Mr. Cortese, Mr. Simon, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:
Today is certainly a proud and happy day for the Leisure World
Foundation and the citizens of Maryland. Our senior citizens parti-
cularly should note this day as an important one in our State.
This beautiful development is indeed unique in that it is planned
as the perfect community for persons of mature years. Practical as
well as luxury features have been included in the plans to make
Leisure World one of the finest communities in Maryland. Such
practical features as the shopping center, the full medical staff and
facilities, free transportation within the community as well as charter
bus service to the neighboring metropolitan areas, and the single
monthly payment that covers all activities will certainly add much to
the comfort and convenience of the residents of Leisure World. The
golf course, swimming pool, riding stable, and other recreational
facilities will provide them with much enjoyment and pleasure.
I was particularly pleased and honored to be asked to officially open
this project today. The first bill which I signed upon taking office as
Governor of Maryland in 1959 was that which created the Commission
on the Aging, and which designated as chairman, Margaret C. Sch-
weinhaut, then a Delegate and later State Senator from Montgomery
County. The welfare of the older citizens of this State has always been
a matter of deep concern to me.
1 am keenly aware, as I know all of you are, that the vision and the
labor of the older citizens of today contributed much to making Mary-
land a great State in a great nation. We should never forget the words
