The construction of this commerical building is another step in
Towson's continuing march of progress.

I am grateful for the opportunity to take part in these ceremonies.

REMARKS, DEDICATION OF THE NEW WESTERN

ELECTRIC CORPORATION, REGIONAL HEADQUARTERS

AND ENGINEERING CENTER, COCKEYSVILLE

December 9, 1965

It is a genuine pleasure to me to be here today to take part in
this ceremony in which we dedicate the new Regional Headquarters
and Engineering Center of the Western Electric Company. It is most
heartening and encouraging to me, as Governor of the State, to wel-
come a new facility to our growing Maryland industrial community.

It is particularly pleasing that the Western Electric Company, one
of the world's leaders in scientific research and development, has
chosen the Greater Baltimore Industrial Park for its new Regional
Headquarters and Engineering Center. This indicates the confidence
that this renewed organization has in the future of Maryland.

state will continue to do everything possible to merit that confidence.
Science-based and science-oriented industry has become one of the
mainstays of our Maryland economy, and we are exerting every effort
to make certain that the State continues to provide the facilities, the
skills and the cultural climate that such industries require. I am cer-
tain that the Western Electric Company will be richly rewarded by
selection of this site for their new headquarters and engineering
center.

Maryland, including the Washington Metropolitan Area, is one of
the world's most important research and science-industry complexes.
The federal government is spending billions of dollars each year to
support research and development. The State of Maryland is the
base of many of these vast federal research facilities, such as the
Atomic Energy Commission, the NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center,
the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation,
the Army Biological Laboratories, the David Taylor Model Basin, the
National Bureau of Standards, and many others.

A congenial cultural and intellectual environment for the scientific
