and Space exploration was made abundantly evident only a few days
ago when he personally went to Cape Kennedy for the launching
into orbit of the Gemini Spacecraft. This nation is, indeed, fortunate
that our guest of honor, in addition to all his other duties, including
presiding over the Senate of the United States, is Chairman of the
National Aeronautics and Space Council.

His appearance here this evening brings to mind one favorite story
about his legislative career. When President Johnson signed the
historic civil rights act into law, he presented our guest of honor this
evening with one of the pens used during the ceremony. The President
also presented him with a copy of the speech which Mr. Johnson
delivered to the nation at that time.

Inscribed upon the document were the following words: "To
Hubert Humphrey — without whom, it couldn't have happened. "

Tonight, I ask you all to join with me in giving a warm welcome
to a man without whom this evening couldn't have happened —
ladies and gentlemen, the Vice-President of the United States, the
Honorable Hubert H. Humphrey.

PRINCE GEORGE'S DEMOCRATIC CLUB

COLLEGE PARK

May 8, 1965

My fellow Democrats:

Every Democrat who loves his party and is ever concerned with its
good fortunes should be overjoyed to see such a healthy turnout of
Democrats at this fund-raising dinner. With another election year
facing us, it is natural enough that we search for signs of things to
come, and I can see nothing but good omens in this enthusiastic
gathering of Prince George's County Democrats.

The speakers who have preceded me on this platform this evening
are representative of the caliber of statesmanship and party leadership
that has made it possible for the Democratic Party to have played a
predominant role in the government of Maryland and its political
subdivisions throughout most of the history of our State. They are
men and women who have demonstrated their interest in the well-
being of the State and its people who have displayed their capacity
