My friends, I strongly and sincerely urge you to go to the polls on
Tuesday and cast your vote for our fellow Eastern Shoreman, Harry
Hughes, for Congress.
REMARKS, INTRODUCTION OF
VICE-PRESIDENT HUMPHREY
BALTIMORE
March 29, 1965
Thank you, Senator Brewster, for that most kind and generous
introduction.
Mrs. Brewster, Chairman and Mrs. Miles, Senator and Mrs. Tydings,
Mayor and Mrs. McKeldin, Reverend Clergy, honored guests at the
head table, fellow Democrats and ladies and gentlemen:
Tonight, I have the pleasure of presenting to you a man who
originally intended to devote his life to the profession of pharmacy
until he discovered that he himself possessed the tonic that the
American people needed. Born in South Dakota, raised in Minnesota,
educated in Colorado and Louisiana and, finally adopted by Mary-
land, our guest of honor this evening is an embodiment of the best
qualities of American life. He is irrepressible, dynamic and, above
all, dedicated to the spiritual, economic and political advancement of
the nation and the world. Five years after he received his Master of
Arts degree from Louisiana State University, our guest of honor was
elected Mayor of Minneapolis and three years later, he was a United
States Senator from Minnesota. Re-elected to that position in 1954
and, again, in 1960, his Senate colleagues honored him in 1961 by
electing him Majority Whip.
His tireless campaigning last year earned for the Johnson-Humphrey
team and for the Democratic Party, one of the greatest victories that
has ever been achieved by any combination in the history of American
politics.
As a working member of the Johnson-Humphrey administration he
serves as Chairman of the President's Council on Equal Opportunity,
Chairman of the President's Committee on Equal Employment Op-
portunity, Chairman of the Peace Corps Advisory Council, Honorary
Chairman of The Employment Opportunity Council and he is a
member of the National Security Council. His interest in Aeronautics
