encouraging our friends and neighbors to go to the polls, I suggest
that all of us from time to time recall the advice of Edmund Burke.
"All that is necessary for the forces of evil to win in the world, '
Burke said, "is for enough good men to do nothing. "
The good people of Kentucky did not achieve greatness for this
State by doing nothing. For, from a hostile wilderness your forebears
carved a society that has inspired poets, novelists, songwriters and
historians. It is my strong belief that the hostile wilderness which
the Republican candidate for President offers Kentucky, Maryland
and all the states of this nation and all the nations of the world will
be firmly rejected on November 3rd.
I urge you to go to the polls on election day and take your family,
friends and neighbors with you so that the future peace and pros-
perity of this nation may be protected with a resounding victory for
Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey and your seven congressional
candidates.
In closing, permit me to once again express my gratitude to you
present here today and to the people of Kentucky for inviting me
to visit with you. It has been a delightful experience for me—one
which I shall enjoy sharing with my fellow Marylanders when I
return home.
