the Centennial. The date to remember is September 6-17, 1962, and
the place is Antietam, Maryland. A century ago, at this hallowed spot,
was staged one of the great decisive battles of the world, one of much
military significance and of tremendous importance in the realm of
international politics.

Maryland played a proud role in the Civil War. She furnished four
regiments each to the Confederacy and to the Union. Consequently, as
odd as it may sound, troops from the Free State met face to face at
Antietam. So it is with a feeling somewhat of obligation that we preserve
this precious chapter in our State's history.

In planning the Maryland commemoration, we recognize that Antie-
tam is more than just a local shrine, that it stands out as a memorial to
all America. Everyone in this nation should have an interest in it. Many
of you who hear me today had ancestors fighting at Bloody Lane, and
Dunkard Church, sectors that made the name Antietam immortal. We
hope you will plan now to return to the scene of this stirring action when
the battle is re-enacted in 1962.

I am happy to be able to extend this invitation well in advance
of the centennial observance, because Maryland wants to be your host
and is ready to offer you the warm hospitality for which our State has
become famous. Please make your plans to come to Antietam in Sep-
tember, 1962, less than three years from now. You will be welcome.

CAMBRIDGE

May 15, 1960

I consider it a rare good fortune to be here among my good friends of
Cambridge and Dorchester County for the observance of the 268th
anniversary of the founding of Christ Church—this house of God which
has figured so splendidly in the glorious annals of our State.

On such an occasion, it is appropriate, I think, that we turn our
thoughts to the past, not because there is any particular virtue in looking
back, but because in the contemplation of events which have occurred
before we can better understand what is happening today and what is
likely to happen in the future. There are episodes in the history of this
great region which we are pleased to call the Eastern Shore, episodes
