over the "false map" or make an issue of whether Taylor's Island is in
fact an island. We are pleased to let things stand as they are.

We who were born and nurtured here know that an Eastern Shoreman
is an Eastern Shoreman whether he comes from Dorchester County,
Sussex County or Accomack County. Perhaps there is a good lesson in
this. We know from our experience that time cures ills and that the
passing of years softens bitter feelings. It gives us hope and encourage-
ment that in the future a little state like Tibet may be able to lie in
security beside a huge nation like Red China in the same way that a
little Maryland and a smaller Delaware now lie at the bosom of
Pennsylvania.

We Marylanders recall the events today only because we have pride
in our ancestry, our heritage and our culture. We have erected this
marker here in commemoration of these events of history because we are
a civilized people and we know that the preservation of his heritage is
the mark of a civilized man.

I know that I voice the sentiment of all Marylanders when I say, as
your Governor, that I am deeply grateful to every person and every
organization that has assisted in the erection of this monument and in
the re-establishment of the historic boundaries of Maryland—to the
Grace Foundation, to the Board of Natural Resources, to the Maryland
Historical Society, to the historical and archaeological societies of Mary-
land and Delaware and to all others. I am confident that we will be as
successful in the other part of our project—the improvement of the
surroundings of historic "Middle Stone"—as we have been here at the
Chapel of Ease. In this ceremony of commemoration, let us dedicate
ourselves to the cause of peace and to a future in which all men may live
together in friendship and neighborliness.

presence of the members of the Maryland Historical Society and the
Chairman and Executive Director of the Civil War Centennial Com-
mission of this opportunity to call the attention of the American people
to one of the great historic events scheduled for commemoration during
