Mrs. Tawes and I want to thank you sincerely for your kind hospi-
tality. I look forward to this gathering each year with anticipation,
feeling very much like a participant at a track meet who is holding
his breath as the starting gun is raised.

I can assure you that after this weekend my colleagues, Daniel B.
Brewster for United States Senator, Louis L. Goldstein, for State
Comptroller, Thomas B. Finan, for Attorney-General, and Carlton
Sickles, for Congressman-at-large, and I will be off and running.

ADDRESS, BREWSTER TESTIMONIAL DINNER
BALTIMORE

September 7, 1962

Congressman Brewster, Mrs. Brewster, Mrs. Petersam, members of
the clergy, distinguished guests at the head table, ladies and gentle-
men, and fellow Democrats. It is a distinct pleasure for me to be here
tonight and take part in this tribute to Danny Brewster. We who
have come to know him so well during the current campaign also
have come to appreciate the qualities of the man well enough to know
that the honor being bestowed upon him tonight is indeed well
deserved.

I am sure that all of you are as familiar with his background as
I am. A graduate of both Princeton and Johns Hopkins University,
Danny first earned the gratitude of all of us as a Marine hero
in World War Two. As a member of the Maryland House of
Delegates from Baltimore County for two terms, Danny Brewster
won wide acclaim and was subsequently elected United States Con-
gressman from the Second District of Maryland. Now in his second
term as a Congressman, Dan Brewster is on the threshold of a new
career in the United States Senate. With your support and with the
support of the citizens of Maryland vitally interested in the future
of this nation, Congressman Brewster will embark on that career
shortly after the general election on November 6.

The need for men like Dan Brewster in the Senate was perhaps
best expressed not too long ago by two very prominent Democratic
leaders in Washington. "Congressman Brewster has made an out-
