next election. Those of you who are experienced political workers
know how true the statement is that national elections are won or lost
in the precinct. You can determine the outcome of the vote in your
precinct, and this result multiplied many times would assure a
Democratic victory.

We all know that to achieve good government requires effort. Our
democracy can flourish only when citizens participate actively. We
are privileged in this country in that we may take part in the affairs
of our government. This means, first, qualifying to vote and using
your ballot intelligently. It means, next, doing our bit in our own
community to encourage others to accept their political responsibil-
ities. Finally, active participation means working for the fulfillment
of the principles set down in the platform of our Democratic Party.

This is not just another Presidential election. November 8, 1960
may be the most important date the world has ever known. People
everywhere are watching and waiting hopefully to see who will be our
choice to guide this great nation. Our next President must be able
to lead our country back to the position of greatness among the world
powers—a position we enjoyed before the Republican regime made
us a second class nation.

Because we Democrats know that our Party can provide the dynamic
leadership needed to face today's challenges at home and abroad, we
must double our efforts to make certain that we win this next election.

Every qualified Democrat should be registered.

Every registered Democrat should be made aware of the importance
of a Democratic victory.

Every Democratic voter should be at the polls on November 8.

You Democratic workers have a great responsibility. The election
depends on you. My very best wishes to all of you.

INTRODUCTION OF SENATOR JOHN F. KENNEDY

PIKESVILLE
September 16, 1960

Fellow Maryland Democrats.... We are here tonight for one special
purpose, and for one purpose only—and that is to give visible and
vocal proof that on next November 8th the State of Maryland is going
