Grady, Walter Graham and Phil Goodman will have the support of
every single solitary Democratic voter in Baltimore City! If you don't
believe that, ask one of the gamest political fighters of them all-
Mayor Tommy D'Alesandro! As a matter of fact, Harold Grady has
emerged from the primary election as one of the strongest political
figures to appear on the Baltimore scene in a long while. It is quite
apparent to everyone that the very existence of the Grady, Graham
and Goodman ticket has somehow deflated the Republican campaign.
With the exception of the last few months, it has been eight long
years since the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland have
both had Democratic chief executives. As Governor of the State, I
am. eagerly anticipating the opportunity to continue working to-
gether during my term of office with a Democratic mayor of Baltimore.
The City of Baltimore is, after all, the center and pivot on which
the entire State depends. Nothing really beneficial and valuable can
be accomplished for the state that does not also serve and benefit
the best interests of Baltimore and its citizens. As Governor, I am
looking forward to the opportunity of working closely and intimately
with Harold Grady. As two Democrats working closely together, I
am confident that we will be able to accomplish many things for the
City of Baltimore that would not be possible should the Republican
Party grasp control of the City administration.
There are so many pressing problems, which cannot be solved with-
out the closest and most continuous cooperation of both the mayor
and the governor. Among other things that come to mind are the
working out of a useful group of common metropolitan services for
Baltimore and the surrounding counties; the development of an
efficient and rapid mass transportation service; the continued growth
and development of the Port Authority; the legislative approval of
the various loans and enabling acts which the City needs if it is to
continue its progress in redevelopment and urban renewal; the in-
tegration of the State and City highway systems into a harmonious
whole; the bringing of new and diversified industry into the metro-
politan area. All these, and many more things, will be accomplished
easier, sooner and better if the mayor and the governor are able to
work together in complete accord and harmony. And Harold, I want
to take this occasion to assure you that when you become mayor of
Baltimore, I am going to do my level best to help you get your pro-
jects started, and to provide you and the City of Baltimore with every
possible assistance that the governor is able to give!
I want to close, if I may, on what I consider a very important note.
