Thereupon Command is given to the Sherr Ann" County to Set the Said
Wm Vernon being in his Custody at the Barr Who thereupon Appears and
the Said Wm Vernon being presently Demanded how he would Acquitt him-
self of the Premisses above Imposed upon him Says he is not in anywise
Guilty thereof and thereof for Tryall puts himself upon God and the Coun-
try and Wm Bladen Esqr his Lordships Attorney Generall (who for his Sd
Lordship in this behalf prosecuteth) Says he is Guilty and prays it may be
Enquired into by the Country Likewise.
Thereupon Command is given to the Sherr of Ann" County (To Witt)
Benj* Tasker Gent, that he cause to Come here forthwith Twelve etc. by
whom etc. who etc. to recognize etc, because as well etc. And now here at
this Day To Witt the Same Day Comes the Said Beja Tasker and Returns
his Said Precept that has here ready Twelve etc. as by his Precept he was
Commanded (To Witt) Philip Jones John Orrick John Batson George
Whitter, James Beale, John Read, Wm Dawkins Wm Kidd, Wm Harrison
Joseph Howard Henry Wright, John Maccubbins, who being Duly Elected
Tryed and Sworn to Say the truth in the premisses upon their Oath Do
Say that the Said Wm Vernon is Guilty of the Matter Whereof he Stands
Indicted
Thereupon the Court Values the Said horse in the Indictm1 afd men-
tioned to the Sum of four pounds ten Shillings Current money Whereupon
Command is given to the Sherr of Annll County to take the Said Wm Vernon
from the Barr of this Court into his Custody and him Safe keep Untill the
Court Shall proceed to proceed to [sic] Judgmt. Ag( him on the Indictmt and
Verdict af"5 for that they will advise thereof
Afterw"8 in the Same Court the Said Sherr is Commanded Again to Set
the Said William Vernon to the Barr wch he Accordingly does and thereupon
the Said Wm Vernon appears and by Thomas Bordley his Attorney Moves
in Arrest of Judgment on the Indictment and Verdict afd Thereupon Time
is given him Untill to Morrow Morning to Argue Such reasons.
Afterwards in the Same Court To Witt on the Twenty fourth Day of July
Anno Dom 1718 the Said Wm Vernon [730] Appears. Thereupon Command
is Again given to the Said Sherr to Take the Said Wm Vernon from the
Barr of this Court into his Custody and him Safe keep Untill the Court
Shall further proceed to hear Such his reasons etc. Afterwds in the Same Court
To Witt in the afternoon of the Day last mentioned the Said Wm Vernon
again Appears.
Wherefore it is Considered by the Justices here the day and year Last
mentioned that the Said Wm Vernon Pay unto the afd Nehemiah Birkhead
the party Grieved four fold of the Value of the Said Horse being Valued at
four pounds ten Shillings by the Court here as afd According to Law Alsoe
It is Considered by the Justices here that the Said William Vernon Stand
in the Pillory one hour and that he receive Twenty one Lashes one his Bare
