City of Annapolis, on Friday the 26th Day of
September, and ended on Wednesday the 15th
Day of October, in the 10th Year of the Dominion
of the Right Honourable FREDERICK, absolute
Lord and Proprietary of the Provinces of Maryland
and Avalon, Lord Baron of Baltimore,
&c.

An Act for easing the Inhabitants of this Province, from the great
and unequal
Burthen of the Additional Land-Tax. Lib. H.S.

N.B. It
appearing by the proceedings of the Commissioners, appointed by the Act
of 1756,
ch. 5, to ascertain the Additional Land-Tax, which was to make goof
the Deficiency of the
Duties and Taxes thereby imposed for sinking the 40000 l. that there
wou'd be imposed a Tax of
7 s. 7 d. per 100 Acres on all Lands, and a farther
sum of 7 s. 7 d. on every 100 Acres held
by papists; which must have been wholly discharged in pursuance of that
Act, by the 25th
March 1761: The aforesaid Rates were hereby
declared to be null and void, &c.
The several Duties, taxes, Fines, &c. imposed by
that Act, for replacing and sinking the
40000 l. were hereby continued during this Act.
Such Parts of the Act of 1746, ch. 1, as relate
to the Regulation of Ordinaries, Ordinary-Keepers,
and granting of Ordinary Licences; and all such Clauses of the Act of 1754,
ch. 9, as
related to the several Duties, Taxes, Licence Money, &c. therein mentioned
(except the Duty
on Servants imported for 7 Years or upwards, and that of 2 d.
per Gallon on Madeira Wine)
were likewise continued during this Act.
In Order to provide against Deficiencies, certain Commissioners
were appointed, and impowered
to meet at the Loan Office on the 1st Monday in August
1762, and to make an estimate of
what the several taxes, &c. herein mentioned and continued would Amount
to in 7 Years, allowing
the 7th Years Collection to be equal to the averaged
Rate of the 6 preceding Years;
and it should appear by such Estimate, that the 40000 l. would not
be sunk by the 20th June
1763, then the said Commissioners were to ascertain what Rate, by way
of Additional Land-Tax,
to be imposed in the same Manner with the former Land-Tax, wou'd be sufficient
to make
good such Deficiency, adding thereto 500 l. and
to make out Certificates thereof under their
Hands and Seals, to the Collectors of the Land-Tax in the several Counties,
&c. Which Additional
Land-Tax was, in such Case to be collected, levied, accounted for, and
paid, under
the same Penalties, &c. as the Land-Tax in the Act of 1756, ch.
5, is directed.
In Case of a Surplus to be raised by Virtue of this
Act over and above making good the Deficiency
aforesaid; the same to be applied towards the Discharge of the public Expence
of this
Province, as the General Assembly shall direct.
This Act to continue until the 20th June 1763,
and to the End of the next succeeding Session,
so that it expired on the 26th November 1763.
