At a Session of ASSEMBLY begun and held at the
    City of Annapolis, the 17th, and ended the 25th Day
    of July, in the 4th Year of the Dominion of the
    Right Honourable FREDERICK, absolute Lord and
    Proprietary of the Provinces of Maryland and Avalon,
   
Lord Baron of Baltimore, &c.  Annoq; Domini
    1754:  The following Laws were Enacted.

An Act for his Majesty's Service.  Lib. H.S.  fol. 152.  EXP.
    N.B. 
By this Act, the Commissioners of the Loan Office were directed to pay 4000 l. 8 s. 
Currency, the Treasurer of the Western Shore
900 l. Currency, and the Treasurer of the
Eastern Shore
1099 l. Currency, amounting in the Whole to 6000 l. Currency, to his
Excellency HORATIO SHARPE, Esq; for his Majesty's Service, towards the Defence of the Colony
of Virginia, then attacked by the French and Indians; and for the Relief and Support of the
Wives and Children of the Indian Allies that put themselves under the Protection of this Government.
For the Re-placing of which the following Duties were laid, in Current Money:
    Nº 1.  On every Hawker, Pedlar, or Petty-Chapman, travelling with Goods,
        from Place to PLace, for Sale, within this Province,   ----    ----    Four Pounds             per Annum
   
Nº 2.  On all Coaches, Chairs, Chaises, Chariots, and such like Carriages, belonging 
        to, and used by Inhabitants of this Province, per Wheel,  Five Shillings
   
Nº 3.  On all Servants imported to serve for 7 Years, or upwards,    
20 Shillings.       per Poll.
    Nº 4.  On all Servants imported to serve by Indenture, or Custom of the Country,
        for a less Term than Seven Years (Germans, or other Aliens, coming from
        any Part of the United Provinces, or Flanders, excepted)      ----    Five Shillings
   
Nº 5.  On all Negroes imported, over and above all former Duties, &c.  10 Shillings
   
Nº 6.  On all Madeira Wine imported,     ----    ----    ----       
Two Pence per Gallon
    Nº 7.  On Ordinary Licences, over and above the Duty imposed thereon by the            per Annum
       Act of 1746, ch. 1,         ----    ----    ----    ----    ----        Twenty Shillings
   
The Duty on Hawkers, &c. (Nº 1,) was to be paid into the Hands of the several County
Clerks to whom such Hawkers, &c. should apply for Licence; the Licences to be renewed yearly,
under the County Seal, and the Clerk to receive 5 s. Fee for each Licence so granted.
    The Duty on Wheels of Coaches, &c. (Nº 2,) to be paid yearly into the Hands of the respective
Sheriffs.
    The Duties on Servants, Negroes, and Wine, (Nº 3 to 6,) to be paid by the Importers to the
respective Naval Officers.
    All the before mentioned Duties were to be accounted annually by the several Officers appointed
to receive the same, and paid to the Commissioners or the Loan Office, deducting thereout
an allowance of 2 1/2 per Cent.
    The additional Duty on Ordinary Licences, (Nº 7,) to be paid and accounted for in the Manner

as directed in the Act of 1746, ch. 1.
    Such Parts of the said Act of 1746, ch. 1, as related to Ordinary-Keepers, and granting of
Ordinary Licences, &c. were hereby continued until such Time as the Purposes of that Act,
and those of the Act of 1746, ch. 10, should be fully answered; and also until such Time as the
6000 l. hereby granted, should be raised and paid to the Commissioners of the Loan Office; who
were directed to keep distinct Accounts thereof.  And in case, during the Continuance of the
present and the aforesaid recited Act, more Money than the said 6000 l. should be raised or paid
into the Loan office, then the Surplus, &c. to be applied to the Public Expences of the Province,
as the General Assembly should direct, &c.
    This Act was to continue in Force from the 1st August 1754, till the said 6000 l. should be replaced
to the Commissioners of the Loan-Office, and to the End of the next Session of ASsembly.
And it was farther continued by 1756, ch. 5, (such Parts thereof excepted as were thereby repealed,
and such as related tot he Duty on Servants imported for the Term of Seven Years and
upwards) from and after the several purposes therein mentioned should be fully compleated, until

the Sum of 40000 l. by that Act raised, should be fully paid and replaced into the Loan Office,
and until the End of the next Session of Assembly.  So that it totally expired on the 26th
November 1763.
