42 "Journal of the Council"

Monday 20th. July 1789

The Council met.
Present as on Saturday.

In Council July 20. 1789

Whereas it appears by the Petition of Benjamin Edwards and Joseph Edwards of St.
Marys County, accompanied with a transcript of the Proceedings of the County Court of said
County, that at March term last they were fined for a trespass committed on a certain Henry
Philips, as follows, Benjamin Edwards Thirty pounds and Joseph Edwards Twenty pounds
Current money, And whereas the Petitioners represent that they are extremely embarrassed in
their Circumstances and have large families to support, And four of the Justices together with
several respectable inhabitants of the said County having recommended them to the [p. 92]
notice of Government, The Board do order and direct that of the Thirty pounds imposed on
Benjamin Edwards Twenty five pounds be remitted, and of Twenty pounds imposed on Joseph
Edwards Seventeen pounds be remitted.

Sufficient Evidence having been produced to this Board that John Spear of Baltimore
Town lost in the Storm of the 24th. July last 919 Bushels of Salt imported in the ship Jupiter
John Henry Stemmitz master the Duties thereon having been secured to be paid to the Naval
Officer of the fourth District. Ordered that the said Naval Officer be and he is hereby required
to discount with or refund to the said John Spear the duties on the said Salt.

The Council adjourned 'till tomorrow morning.
