282 "Journal of the Council"

Justice of the Peace for said County several years past, that in the year 1788 he was appointed
a Collector of the Tax for the said County and being desirous of finishing his Collection as
soon as possible, And understanding that there was to be a numerous meeting of the inhabitants
at Piscataway on Monday the fifth day of April 1790 he made it his business to be there for
the purpose of forwarding his Collection, that by the Act of Assembly passed November
Session 1789 entitled "An Act for regulating the Inspection of Tobacco" the Magistrates of the
respective Counties therein mentioned are directed to attend at the Court house on the first
Monday in April to report and examine into the State of the several Inspection Houses in the
County, under the penalty of twenty pounds Current Money, that being fully persuaded that the
Object of the said Law would be answered by the attendance of Fielder Bowie a Justice in the
same place with himself, he was induced not to attend at the Court House for which neglect
he was fined the sum of Twenty pounds, that the Law under which he was fined did not arrive
in the County so as to be [p. 107] generally known, particularly to him, a transcript
from the Clerk of the Court accompanied by a recommendation from the two Associate Justices
being laid before the Board, they are of Opinion that the fine should be remitted and do order
and direct a remission accordingly.

Commission issued to Nicholas Rogers, George Salmon and William McLaughlin
appointed Justices of the Orphans Court of Baltimore County, and also to William Russell
and Hercules Courtenay appointed Associate Justices of the County Court of the said County.

The Auditor is requested to issue Certificates for the Depreciation of Pay to Mordecai
Cooley and Robert Cooley, late soldiers in the first Maryland Regiment and deliver the same
to the Treasurer of the W. Shore who is ordered to pay them to James Cooley Administrator
of the said Mordecai and Robert. [p. 108]

Friday 6th. July 1792

Mr Davidson

John Bassford appointed Inspector of Beards point Warehouse in Ann Arundel County,
and Commission issued.

Ordered that the western Shore Treasurer pay to John Shaw Twenty five pounds on
