Joseph Sprigg junior is appointed and Commissioned Surveyor
of Washington County in the room of Thomas Brookes deceased.

Ordered that the Western Shore Treasurer pay to John Davidson
Esqr. thirty seven pounds, ten shillings for one quarter's Salary as
a Member of the Council.

The Council adjourned 'till tomorrow morning.

Thursday 5th. February 1789

The Council met.

Present as on Yesterday.

The Petition of Edward Dorsey of Edward, of Anne Arundel
County praying a Remission of a fine of twenty two pounds, ten
shillings imposed on him by the County Court of said County at
August term last, for whipping John Wooding a freeman without
Authority, was read and rejected. And also the Petition of Catharine
Stewart of Baltimore County praying a Remission of a fine of six
hundreds pounds of Tobacco and thirty shillings Current Money
imposed on her by the Criminal Court of said County at January
term last for selling Liquors without Licence, was read and rejected,
she having been relieved on the 2d. July last for the like Offence,
[p 30] Ordered that the Western Shore Treasurer pay to Benja-
min Rumsey Esquire fifty pounds Current Money for one quarter's
Salary as one of the Judges of the Court of Appeals due the 1st.
instant.

In Council February 5th. 1789

Margaret Raney of Baltimore County by her Petition sets forth
that she was fined by the Criminal Court of the said County at their
last November term for selling Liquors without licence, that she has a
small family of Children who look up to her for support and is ex-
tremely indigent, that unless she obtains relief from the said fine she
will be plunged into a loathsome prison and her Children become a
burthen to the County. A number of respectable inhabitants of Balti-
more town having represented that her situation is extremely helpless
and poor, and having recommended her to the attention of Govern-
ment, and four of the Justices of the Court aforesaid also concurring
in this Representation and recommendation, The Board in considera-
tion thereof do hereby order and direct that the fine imposed as
aforesaid be and it is hereby remitted.
