Thursday 21st. August 1788
The Council met.
Present as on friday last.
In Council August 21st. 1788
Margaret Johnson of Baltimore County by her Petition sets forth,
that she was presented and indicted at Baltimore Criminal Court,
last June term for selling Liquors without Licence, and on trial was
found guilty, and was fined six hundred pounds of Tobacco and thirty
shillings currency as appears by a transcript from the said Court,
that she and an aged Mother have no other dependance for their
subsistance than the industry and labour of the Petitioner, and that
if the fine and fees are levied she must be reduced to a very low state
and have neither food nor raiment to support them. A number of
respectable inhabitants of Baltimore town having recommended a
Remission of the aforesaid fines as also three of the Justices of the said
Court, the Board are of opinion that the fine of six hundred pounds of
Tobacco ought to be remitted, and do order and direct a Remission
accordingly.
