226 Journal of the State Council, 1784-1789.
[p 273] In Council November 9th. 1787
Henry Gray of Charles County by his petition to the Board sets
forth that at a Court held for the aforesaid County in November
1780, he was fined in the sum of twenty pounds, for Committing an
Assault on a Certain Benedicta Davis. The petitioner represents,
that his Offence was very trifling, amounting to no more than some
small freedoms taken with the said Benedicta Davis; but short of
violence or even rudeness. He further represents, that he is so poor
as to be subject to no tax; that he lives by hard labour, and that it
would take his years work to pay the fine. And three of the Justices
of the County having recommended a remission of the same, the Board
in consideration of the lightness of his Offence, the poverty of the
petitioner, and the expence which he has incurred by Costs on the
presentments, do Order and direct that the said fine of twenty
pounds be and it is hereby remitted.
