forth that at August Court 1783 for the said County he was fined
on four Presentments in 600 lbs. of Tobacco each, for selling Spiritous
Liquors contrary to Law, the truth of which appears by an Official
transcript accompanying the Petition. He alledges that the Offence
was committed through ignorance of the Law, and that the payment
of the fines would greatly distress him, as he is very poor, and has a
Wife and eight Children to support. The Petitioner's state of facts
is certified to be true by two Justices of the aforesaid County who
jointly with another Magistrate recommend him to the Clemency
of the Board. Whereupon in Consideration of the Petitioner's
poverty and the Costs that have accrued on the several Presentments,
do order and direct that the aforesaid forfeitures amounting in the
whole to twenty four hundred pounds of Tobacco be and they are
hereby remitted.

In Council August 16th. 1787

Robert McMullen of Caecil County by his Petition to this Board
sets forth that he has been fined by the County Court of the said
County twelve hundred pounds of Tobacco for selling Liquors con-
trary to Law, that he acts as a Ferryman at Susquehanna!! at the
middle ferry, that he is very poor and has a family of Children, and
five of the Justices of the said County having certified as to his
poverty, this Board in Consideration of the poor Circumstances of
the Petitioner, and that the Costs will in all probability deter him
from transgressing in future, do direct that the said fines amounting
to 1200 lbs. of Tobacco be remitted, which is accordingly done.

The Council met. Present as on Yesterday.

Ordered That the Western Shore Treasurer pay to Jacob Bles-
singer two pounds and nine pence, also to Jacob Cosell thirteen
pounds, eleven shillings and six pence agreeably to the "Act to adjust
the Debts due from this State" adjusted by the Aud'r. General to the
1st. instant and also to James Burke four pounds five shillings specie
agreeably to the Act aforesaid passed by the Auditor this Day.

The Council met.
