to apply to the late assembly, at the time they gave gratuities to the
other officers, and by reason of his absence, cannot now do it by
petition. I can assure you, that he distinguished himself as a diligent
and brave officer, on several occasions ; and that his whole conduct
while he served in the Maryland troops was such as should recom-
mend him to your favorable notice. I flatter myself therefore that he
will not remain the only one of all our subaltern officers, that
survived the war without a recompense, or gratuity from the
province.

M.r speaker having acquainted the house, that a paper had been
delivered to him, and that he was informed, it was a petition from
some of the freeholders of Ann Arundel County, complaining
against their late election. And the resolve of the 7.th instant being
read viz.t "That no new business be moved for after Saturday
next": The question was put, whether the said paper be received
or not ? Resolved in the affirmative.
M.r Jennings brings in and delivers to M.r speaker, an ingrossed
bill entitled an act appointing new visitors for the public school in
Frederick County, and for other purposes therein mentioned: Which
is read, and assented to, and sent to the upper house by M.r Thomas
and M.r Purnel
Mr. Sullivane brings in and delivers to M.r speaker, the ingrossed
bill entitled and act for granting to the Nanticoke indians a compen-
sation for the lands therein mentioned: Which is read and assented
to, and sent to the upper house by M.r Thomas and M.r Purnel.
The petition of sundry freeholders, and free-voters of Ann Arundel
County, complaining of an undue election therein, was read and
rejected for the uncertainty thereof
M.r Chase brings in and delivers to M.r speaker a bill entitled an
act for the relief of the poor within the several Counties therein
mentioned.
M.r Hall brings in and delivers to M.r speaker, a bill entitled an
act for amending and declaring the law in the cases therein mentioned.
M.r Sullivane brings in and delivers to M.r speaker, a bill entitled
a supplementary act to the act entitled, an act to establish a road
from Hunting Creek in Dorchester County to Dover in Talbot
County.
M.r Hayward brings in and delivers to M.r speaker, a bill entitled
an act confirming to Spedding Bromwell of Talbot County certain
lots of land therein mentioned.
Which bills were severally read the first time and ordered to lie
on the table.
