A bill entitled an act to impower the justices of Somerset and
Worcester Counties to levy on the taxable inhabitants of Stepney
parish in Somerset and Worcester Counties, the quantity of one
hundred and sixty thousand pounds of tobacco for the uses therein
mentioned: Which bills were indorsed: "By the upper house of
assembly; June 14.th 1768: Read the first and second time by an
especial order and will pass.

The bill entitled an act for the better regulating the office of
sheriff, and further advancement of justice within this province;
read the second time and will pass. Sent to the upper house by
M.r Bordley and M.r Beall.
The bill entitled an act for the security of purchasers and others,
being protestants, claiming by or from aliens; read the second
time, and will pass. Sent to the upper house by M.r Wilson and M.r
Harrison.
M.r Steele appeared in the house.
The ingrossed bill entitled an act to remedy the inconveniencies
arising from the loss of some proceedings in saint Marys County
court; read, and assented to, and sent with the paper bill, to the upper
house by M.r Gantt and M.r Ward.
The house adjourns 'til 2. o'clock
Post meridiem. The house met according to adjournment. M.r
Ridgley, M.r Moale and M.r Adair appeared in the house. The order
of the day being read, the house further took into consideration, the
petition of John Hammond Dorsey, and it was proposed that the
question should be put, whether the three members returned from
Baltimore County and petitioned against by M.r John Hammond
Dorsey, be duly elected, or not? The previous question was put,
Whether that question be now put ? Resolved in the negative.
The house then took into consideration the petition of Charles
Ridgley junr and others, against M.r Thomas Cockey Deye; and
after examining several witnesses at the bar of this house, Resolved,
that a determination be had on the petitions of John Hammond Dor-
sey, and Charles Ridgley jun.r and others. The question was put

whether M.r John Ridgley, a member returned for Baltimore County
be duly elected? Resolved in the negative. The question was put
whether M.r John Moale, be duly elected? Resolved in the negative.
The question was put whether M.r Robert Adair be duly elected ? Re-
solved in the negative. The question was put, whether M.r Thomas
Cockey Deye be duly elected? Resolved in the negative, Whereupon
M.r speaker by the directions of the house, acquaints Messieurs John
Ridgley, John Moale, Robert Adair and Thomas Cockey Deye, that
upon a full hearing of the witnesses at the bar, this house is of
