No. 17 A Supplementary Act to the Act entituled an Act to prevent the
Mischiefs Arising from the Multiplicity of Useless Dogs and
other purposes therein Mentioned

Whereas it is represented that to people living in the Country
and having Families two Dogs at least about one Plantation are
on many Occasions usefull and Necessary and that therefore it is
reasonable to allow such people Two dogs to be kept Tax free and it
is also found that the Tax laid by the Act to prevent the Mischiefs
arising from the Multiplicity of Useless Dogs and other purposes
therein mentioned on Supernumerary Dogs is not large enough to
answer the good end designed of reducing them

Be it therefore Enacted by the Right Honourable the Lord Pro-
prietary by and with the Advice and consent of his Lordships Gov-
ernor and the Upper and Lower Houses of Assembly and the
Authority of the same that during the Continuance of the said
recited Act every Master Mistress or head of a Family not living
within any City or Town within this Province shall be Allowed to
own and keep two Dogs such as the said Act describes at any one
plantation Tax free and that for every other Dog so owned or kept
by any Master or Mistress or head of a Family not being within any
City or Town as aforesaid and also for every Dog more than one so
Owned or kept by any Master Mistress or head of a Family living
within any City or Town and for every Dog so owned or kept by
any single person not being a Freeholder or having or keeping a
Family there shall be paid yearly and every Year Five shillings in
Lieu and stead of the one shilling directed to be paid by the said

recited Act, The said five shillings p Dog so to be paid to be Levied
Collected and Applied in the same manner and to the same uses and
purposes as the said one shilling p Dog was by the said recited Act
directed any thing in the said recited Act or any other Law usage
or Custom to the Contrary Notwithstanding

be the duty of the Constables and they are hereby directed and
required instead of taking and returning an Account of the Number
of dogs more than one owned or kept by any Master Mistress or head
