[THIS ANONYMOUS CONTEMPORARY PAMPHLET, "AN
ANSWER TO THE QUERIES - - - AND TO THE REMARKS
UPON A MESSAGE", THE FULL TITLE OF WHICH is GIVEN

IN THE NEXT PARAGRAPH, IS THE VERY LENGTHY REPLY
BY SOME REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PROPRIETARY GOVERN-
MENT TO THE SEVERE STRICTURES UPON THE PROPRIE-
TARY, GOVERNOR SHARPE, AND THE UPPER HOUSE, CON-
TAINED IN THE "QUERIES", WHICH HAD APPEARED IN THE
PUBLIC LEDGER, AS WELL AS TO THE PAMPHLET, "RE-
MARKS UPON A MESSAGE". ALL THE IMPORTANT CONTRO-
VERSIAL QUESTIONS BETWEEN THE TWO HOUSES WHICH

HAD BEEN BROUGHT FORWARD IN THE "QUERIES" AND IN
THE "REMARKS" ARE REPLIED TO HERE IN "AN ANSWER".
THE READER IS REFERRED TO A RATHER FULL DISCUSSION
OF "AN ANSWER" ITS PROBABLE AUTHORSHIP AND PLACE

OF PUBLICATION, ON PAGES lxx-lxxii OF THE INTRODUC-
TION OF THIS VOLUME. THERE ARE ONLY THREE KNOWN
COPIES OF THIS PAMPHLET, ONE IN THE MARYLAND HIS-
TORICAL SOCIETY, ONE IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, AND
