LAND MATTERS. THE EXTRAVAGANT USE OF ABBREVIA-
TIONS SUGGESTS THAT IT MAY HAVE BEEN A COPY KEPT
BY THE WRITER, AND NOT THE ORIGINAL LETTER SENT. CE-
CILIUS WRITES OF THE ATTACK RECENTLY MADE AGAINST
THE PROPRIETARY GOVERNMENT OF MARYLAND BY AN
ANONYMOUS WRITER, WHO IN A SERIES OF "QUERIES",
WHICH APPEARED IN THE LONDON PUBLIC LEDGER, AT-
TACKED NOT ONLY THE PROPRIETARY GOVERNMENT BUT
ALSO CECILIUS PERSONALLY ON SUSPICION OF HIS BEING
A ROMAN CATHOLIC, AND FOR POSING AS THE PROVINCIAL
AGENT. THE LETTER ITSELF is A SOMEWHAT INCOHERENT
DEFENSE OF THE PROPRIETARY GOVERNMENT, ESPECIALLY
OF THE UPPER HOUSE, AND AN ATTACK UPON THE LOWER
HOUSE IN THE MATTER OF ITS BILL PROVIDING FOR A PRO-
VINCIAL AGENT IN ENGLAND.]

My Dear Lord
I have rec.d y.rs the 26th of Jan.y the 9.th Ins.t I immediately dis-
patched Let.rs to the Mess.rs Hanbury & to Mr. Lyon for their
acco.ts to you desired, w.h by this Post I transmit you & my Acco.ts
of paym.ts made & y.r artificers in London as well as y.r Orders to
me & to others of paym.ts on y.r acco.ts by the Mess.rs Hanbury my
draughts on them.
Y.r Observations on the Public writer ab.t Maryland very just,
ag.t his abuse con.g (concerning) the Provincial plan of Governm.t,
as near as can be & exercised (?) agreeable to our happy Constitu-
tion Both in Church & State with.t Error upw.ds a Hundred & Thirty
Years by y.r Ancestors & y.r Lordps, by & under y.r Royal Charter
Now Question'd & Interrogated by an anonymous Sophistical Up-
start, who with false Logic & Assertion & with Low Craft has
attempted to slur y.r rights & to hurt the Crown's Power thro.h y.r
Lord.ps sides of y.r Royal Charter. As to his Sarcasm on me by
false Supposition, by Error of Calendar publish'd, gives me no
desquietude., I was trained in my tender years bet: 9 & 10 in a
Protestant School, Defye the Pope, the Devil & the writter, who like
a Rattle Snake lays Couched & has venom. I fear him not, despise
him, his Rattle will discover him & I have a swish for him. I am by yr
authority y.r Provincial Sec.y, I assume no character by appointm.t
from the Province as Provincial Agent, under w.h denomination
the Lib.r writer fosters his Design ag.t me, that I frustrate their
appeal ab.t Grivances from the Tribunal of Majesty; on the con-
trary, I have urged their, bring forth the complaints before the
sacred Prescence. Not doubting in the least But that y.r Lordps
rectitude in all matters would well prove their false complaints &
set in view their spot'd principles & minds.
