Kent County Court Proceedings, 1668-1671.261 Head, John Wright and William Bishop gent: Comishonrs Joyntely Liber C and Seuerally to Keepe the Peace in the County of Kent, And to keepe & cause to be kept all Lawes & orders made for the good and Conservation of the Peace And for the Quiet rule & Goverment of the people in all & euery the Articles of Same, And to chasetise & punish all parsons offending against the forme of Any of the Lawes & orders of Our said Prouince of Maryland or of any of them in the County of Kent aforesaid As according to the forme of those Lawes & orders shall be fitt to be done, Wee haue allsoe Constituted & ordayned you the sd Robert Dunn and John Vicaris (unlesse some one of or Coun sell be Present) To be Or Comishonrs to enquire by the Oathes of good & Lawfull men of yor County aforesd of all manor of felonies witch craftes inchantments sorcery magick arts trespasses forestallings ingrosseings & extortioners whatsoeuer, And of all & singuler other misdeeds and offences of which Justices of Peace in England may or ought lawfully to inquire by whomesoeuer or whensoeuer done or Per petrated or wch heareafter shall happen to be donn or perpetrated in the County aforesd against the Lawes & orders of or sd Prouince of Maryland Prouided that you pceede not in any of the cases aforesd to take life or member but that in euery such case you send the Prisoners with theire indictment and the whole matter depending before you to the next Prouinciall Court to be holden for or sd Prouince whenso euer or wheresoeuer to be holden there to be tryed And further wee doe authorize you to issue out writts prosses and Attachments to hold plea of Oyer and terminer and after judgment Execution to awarde in all casses Ciuill whether in actions reall or Personall where the thing in Action doth not exceed three thousand pounds of tobacco according to the Lawes Orders & reasonable Customes made & used in or sd Proulnee of Maryland for which cases ciuell soe to be tryed, Wee doe Constitute ordaine & appoint you Robert Dunn & John Vi- caris to be Judges as aforesd unless some one of our Councill be then in Cort And therefore we comand you that you diligently intend the keepeing of the peace Lawes & orders & all & singuler other the prmisses and at certaine dayes appointed according to Act of As sembly in that case provided in such places as you or any fower of you as aforesd shall on that behalf e appoint yee make inquieries upon the prmisses and perform and fullfill the same in forme aforesaid, doeing therein tht which to Justice appurtañeth according to the Lawes or ders & reasonable Customes of or sd Prouince; Saueing to us the Amercements & other things thereof to us belongeing And there fore wee comand the Sheriff of the sd County of Kent by vertue of these Presents that at the dayes & places aforesaid which you or any fower of you as aforesd shall make knowne to him to giue his Attendance on you And if neede require to cause to come before you or any such fower or more of you as aforesd such & soe many good |
