Council of Maryland, 1781-1782. 47

[Council to Patrick Sim Smith Esqr]

We have yours of Yesterday and tho' we are extremely con-
cerned at the public Misfortune you mention, we are well satisfied
that no Blame can be imputed to you. Such Wheat as cannot be
manufactured into Flour, you will dispose of on the best Terms in
your Power, the rest you will manage as you propose in your Letter.
We have sent you by Mr Norris, one hundred Pounds of the last
Emission, and we hope you will be able to make your Returns by
the next Post, which will be in Time. As for Depreciation, we are not
authorized to allow any; you will therefore regulate yourself accord-
ingly. Mr Calhoun being no longer Commissary General, it is prob-
able he will not think himself bound by our former Order, and no
new Commissary General being yet appointed, it is likely you will not
soon be suplied with Salt from that Quarter; it will be proper there-
fore that you purchase as much as will answer your immediate Occa-
sions, on the best Terms possible
