for the Security of the Inhabitants, to keep those Men in Town 'til
the Sailors leave it, and we request you will billet them as the Law
directs.

March 31
Liber No. 78
p. 434

[Wm Paca in Council to Honble Intendant]

The Delegates in Congress inform us by every Opportunity, of
their very great Distress for Money. In their last Letter, they men-
tion that they have not received the Orders on Philadelphia for £300,
which was to have been transmitted three Weeks ago, and that they
must either be immediately supplied, or must leave Philadelphia; as
they are at present obliged to subsist upon the Credit of a Class of
People, who are by no Means able to afford it. This Situation is
truly disgraceful to the State, as well as to the Gentlemen who repre-
sent it, and we request you will immediately take Measures to supply
them with a Sum equal to what will be due to them by the Time the
Remittance reaches Philadelphia. We presume you may now sell

Ibid.

Specifics at a good Price, and we hope the Treasury will soon be in a
Condition to pay those Demands upon the Public, for which the
Honor of the State is pledged. We need not urge any Reasons to
convince you of the Impropriety of Delay. Among the Blessings of
Peace our Citizens ought to have the earliest Evidence of a Restora-
tion of Public Faith.
