[W Paca in Council to Sergeant Suit.]

We apprehend the State Ship, building at Mr Stephen Stewards
Yard, is in Danger from the Enemy's Barges. We therefore desire
you will collect all the Men in Town, fit for this Service, and march
them down to Mr Steward's, where you will do all in your Power
to guard the Ship. Mr Steward will supply the Party with Provisions.
Mr Shaw will supply you with good Arms and Accoutriments for
the Men, as well as Ammunition

Wednesday 12th February 1783.

Present as on Yesterday. —
Ordered that the western shore Treasurer pay to Capt Clement
Cannon Twenty one pounds, seventeen shillings and six pence specie
agreeable to the Act to adjust the Debts due from this State per Ac-
counts passed. —
That Mr Shaw deliver to Mr Wasteneys twelve Muskets, two hun-
dred Musket Cartridges, and twelve rounds 4lb fixed Ammunition for
which Mr Steward is to be accountable. —
The Council having agreed to furnish a party of men under the
Command of Serjeant Suit ordered to West River to Guard the State
Ship building at Mr Stewards, with some Articles of necessary Cloth-
ing — the Question was put, If the Intendant has not Blankets, shall
be directed to buy them. —

[B. Stoddert Presdt in Council to Mr John Crisall]

This Board have ordered a Party of Men to West River, to de-
fend the State Ship building by Mr Steward, and it will be necessary
to furnish them with Provisions during their Continuance there; we
therefore request you to send ten Barrels of Pork and 12 of Flour by
Mr Steward's Vessel now in the Dock, which will go down tomorrow.

We have yours by Mr Wasteneys — As to the Head for the Ship,
we cannot agree to any additional Expence. As to the Spar Deck, you
must go on with it, agreeable to the former Determination. We have
sent Sergeant Suit with 12 Men, to guard the Ship, and we have also
sent to your Care, for which you are to be accountable, twelve spare
Musquets, 200 Musquet Cartridges, and twelve Rounds of 4lbs fixed
Ammunition. We would recommend to you, to fix some Signal with
your Neighbours, to come to your Assistance in Case of Danger.
