plication to the State Commissioners and enjoyn them to be punc-
tual in executing your Orders in the purchase of Provisions.
Number of our Soldiers are falling sick — the Season, Climate, &
fatigue our Army will undergo for some time, will oblige the Com-
mander in Chief to Order large quantities of Spirits to be Issued —
we shall want a considerable quantity of Whiskey from you as speed-
ily as it can be procured.
The whole Army moves down towards York to morrow morning
at five oClock, and its said they will not halt until they are within one
Mile of CornwalliSts Works. It is reported he is strongly fortified
therefore in a few Days the Opperations of both Armys will become
very serious.

[Deposition of John Mills]
Ann Arundel County To wit
On the 27 day of September 1781 John Mills personally appeared
before me one of the Justices of the peace for the County aforesaid
and made Oath that he Entered himself in the Select Militia in Saint
Mary's County before the Draught for Receiving Two Battalions
took place in that County and that he hath Considered himself bound
as one of the Select Militia of Saint Marys County

The Bearer hereof Capt Harrison waits on your Excellency for
orders, his Vessel being loaded with 400 Bbls Bread and Flour for
the Army in Virginia, you will Please to give him the Necessary
Directions, where to proceed to unload his Cargo.

[Pat. Sim Smith, Calvert, to Gov. Lee.]

I yesterday sent off my second Drove of Fifty head of Beef Cattle
for George Town, the first were delivered safe and I have a Receipt
from the Quarter Master then for them. I shall continue the Collec-
tion with all possible expedition, and as it would be of great advan-
tage to have the Cash to pay down for the whole, could it be spared
I shall be very glad of a Supply by return of the post. I did suppose
from the Troops going down by Water that there would be no Occa-
sion to send any more Beef to George Town, and wrote last week on
that Subject. Must beg therefore to be inform'd if I am still to Con-
tinue sending them there or if not, where they were to be deposited.
