[Sam. Smith, Balt., to Gov. Lee.]

On my return from Anapolis I applied myself to the purchase of
Clothing & had the good fortune to meet with very few refusals,
I Have Bot abt sufficient of Cloth & Plush to make 100 suits, Linens
cannot be procur'd for New Money Red Cloth for facings there is
none, Hats, Shoes, ozns will not be sold for New Money, Indeed on
a Strict View, I do not find Sufficient Clothing for 500 suits in this
place, I can get the Taylors to work for the New Money, but want
of scarlet will Stop us. About £150 Specie would purchase sufficient
of Scarlet Cloth for the facings. If your Excellcy Can permit it, I
will Supply the Means & deduct it out of my second payt for Lots on
Whetstone point, perhaps a more expeditious Mode may be ap-
pointed by your Board. Mr Lemmon has Ask'd Time to consider the
Sale of his Breeches for red Money. I do not like Consideration in
these Matters. The Sword Maker will not touch our pay. In fine Sir
