I flatter myself I shall stand excused for the delay under the cir-
cumstances I have related as I could not leave my family in their
distressed Situation on any Account
I am under the necessity of Hiring several persons to assist in
Collecting & driving the Cattle up, and am at a loss to know how I
shall pay them, having no money on hand, Must request therefore
that I may be furnished with some by the first opportunity, as I shall
be unable to hire men to carry men for me unless those I have already
got are paid

[W. Smallwood to the Governor and Council]

The Bearer Mary Watson being destitute of subsistance with a
young child, having lost her Husband by an unfortunate accident
from one of the pieces of Artillery going of for want of proper
spunging on the Day of the Entertainment given by the Citizens is
recommended as an object of compassion to the Governor & Council
for an Allowance of Provision &c for her Support

[Eph. Blaine, C. G. P., Philada to His Excellency Governor Lee]

Inclosed is a Letter from Mr Morris respecting the Supplies of
your State, there is an immediate demand for three hundred Bar-
rels of Salt Provisions and four hundred Bbls. of Flour at the Head
of Elk for which I have called upon Mr Hollingsworth and Mr
Calhoon State Agents. Your Excelly will please to urge a special
Compliance and give farther directions for the purchase of your
Specific Supplies the receival of which I will attend to in a very few
days.

[Robt Morris, Office of Finance, to Col. E. Blaine Commy Genl
of Purchases]

In a conference with His ExcelF the Commander in Chief he
suggested the propriety of depositing a small Magazine of Provi-
sions at the Head of Elk to answer the Contingent demands which
might arrise during the course of the Campaign. The quantity he
mecntion'd is three hundred Danels of Flour and as many of Salted
provisions with twelve Hhds Rum. I am to request that you will cause
the Flour & Salted Provisions to be procured & placed in proper
Stores at the Head of Elk from the Specific Supplies due by the
States of Delaware & Maryland on the requisitions of Congress of
the 25th November 1780.
The Rum I will cause to be delivered you in this City on Acct of
the Supplies due from the State and you will take care to have it
transported thither.
