408 Letters to the Governor and Council

the Draughts Substitutes & recruits &c to meat at Snow hill on Tues-
day next, and as many as I Can git mony to pay I shall Indeavour to
send forward, but I am afraid that the want of mony will prevent
their Marching so soon as you wish, for the Sheriff ashures me, that
he cannot colect the 4/ Tax, he has Executed many of the first People,
and Cannot sell the goods he has Seazed for any thing, Under these
Circumstances, I submit it to your Excellency wheather mony of the
Last Emmition had not better be sent down for the purpose of for-
warding these men, it Can be replaced as soon as the 4/ is Collected

I shall carefully examine all those that have excuses, and if they
Come within the Law & your Directions I shall Discharge them, as
soon as they are Convened and the number of the Effected ascer-
tained I shall make a return in the Intrem I hope to Receive your
Instructions whare they are to march, to Cross the Bay, I sopose their
will be one hundred & fifty that will march from this County & Som-
erset, if those men are to pass at Kent Island the Expence will be
Very heavy for fearige &c Besides the Distance to March, I should
be Glad sum proper officer could Receive them heare with proper
powers to Draw provisions, Imploy Baggage wagons &c as that
number of men, Cannot Be marched so far without such Conveni-
ency, or a sufficient sum of money to Bare their Expences, we have
got all our prisoners again but Slocum & Cox, they I Believe have
Joined the Enemy, as soon as the Judges of the Special Court Sits
I shall send them forward to their orders
N B As soon as I can see the managers of the Barge I will Com-
municate your Letter to them I am Shure she will answer, as I Be-
live she is one of the finest Barges in the Bay.

And Please your Excelly & Honours Inclosed is a return of Pro-
visions recd in the months of June and July, the quantity received in
June being very small and my being extreamly throng prevented my
making a return of it untill now. As I have had this flour to freight
up Inspect to waggon to the Mills and get the most of it bolted over
again and in many Instances to get new Casks to Cooper nail &ca to
waggon the bolted flour to Christeen, on account of your order to
Mr Sam Smith, and am sorry to inform you that after all this ex-
pence and trouble I have not got one Barrel (that is bolted over
again to pass the Philada Inspection) and of course Mr Smith has
had very little assistance from me, though I have done every thing
in my power to serve him, the Flour I wrote you in my last was bad,
am sorry it is since so fully verifyed, I had a hundred and odd Bar-
rels bolted that came from the Eastern shore, (or at least such parts
of it as appeared fittest for its bolting) and sent to Philada as p
Mr Smiths order, the whole was condemned, I thought it best to let
