[Dan'l Jenifer, Portobacco, to Gov. Lee.]
I did myself the honor by the last post of informing your Excel-
lency that the Quota of horses for this county were made up, and that
they were very burthensome to my son, I fear that the post (as I recd
no answer) hath lost or mislaid my Letter. The Horses since they
have been in my possession, are much bettered, and I hope will please.

[P. Thomas, Frederick, to Gov. Lee.]
Mr Hopkins Lewis is very desirous to obtain a Commission in the
Maryland Line He has lived here several months and appears to have
conducted himself to the Satisfaction of every Body. He is thrown
out of employment in consequence of the Removal of the Conven-
tion Prisoners, And informs me that the Army under Ld Cornwallis
possesses that part of Virginia where his Father, on whom he de-
pends, resides. He is therefore reduced to a very disagreeable situa-
tion in consequence of the inclosed Certificate and the circumstances
he is under I take the Liberty to recommend him to the notice of
your Excellency and the Honble Board.

I have the honor to inform you that the Honorable Samuel Hunt-
ington having informed the United States in Congress Assembled
that the State of his health would not permit him to continue longer
in the exercise of the duties of President, and requested leave of
absence, Congress have this day proceeded to the choice of a Presi-
dent, and have elected the Honorable Thomas McKean.

[Information of Jno Traverse agt Saml. Gerrock & others, taken
10. July 1781]
Informa of Jno Traverse He saw Saml Gerrock at Portsmouth
the 6th Day of June last he was in Company with Jacob Hayward.
Gerock informed him his Intention was to establish a Trade between
Portsmouth & Balt, does not know that Gerock has a Protection.
Gerock went with him in his Vessel from Morumsco to Portsmouth.
Gerock told him he had lodged Money in the Hands of Doctr
Heuston to purchase Plank which he intended to transport to Ports-
mouth and was about buying a large French Schooner. Vessels were
to be sent from Baltimore to receive the Plank in the Bay and carry
it to Portsmouth — he came from Portsmouth in a Boat belonging to
Elijah Sturgis and left it the same Day he did. Gerock & Hayward
were constantly together.
Saw Jacob Hayward in Portsmouth 6th June Hayward told him
he had carried several Load of Corn to the Enemy in Portsmouth
