[Sam Smith, Balt., to The Honble James Brice, Esq, Annapolis]

I am honor'd by yours of the 26th which I this Moment recd I recd
a few Notes from Mr Muir on Choptank, which I sold Immy at 15/
specie & recd the Money, when I Can make such sales It is much
better to sell at the warehouses than to forward to Philad. as you

will See at Bottom. All the Tobacco I Have hitherto recd is either sold

or on its way to Philada except that in George Town. The Exigen-
cies of my Department are such as make quick sales sometimes neces-
sary. The Contracts I Have already made are more than sufficient
to swallow up all the property in my Hands. Indeed I Have already
myself purchaStd Nearly all the Clothing to Compleat the Law; that
is for such of the Troops of this State in the Continental Service as
are now in this State & for such as are now raising. I found no
occasion for seizing, every person was willing to sell & at much lower
prices than they would Cost by seizures — This way pleases — Seizures,
altho more is promiStd, Occasions much Dissaffection among the
People. I cannot Immy make a return of particular articles but you
may depend on 500 Compleat suits of Clothes which are principally
on the Soldiers & the whole will be the Beginning of next week. I
Have already Supplied Mr Muir & Mr Keeport p acct IncloStd
