[Dan'l of St. Thos. Jenifer, Dan'l Carroll, R. Potts, Phila, to
Gov. Lee.]
We received your Excellencys Letter which you did us the honor
to write the 22d Inst
We are truely sensible of your Excellencys & the Councils incli-
nation to support us in this place, we have only to regret that the
means in your power have not hitherto been adequate to the purpose ;
but if the Tobacco which you put under Mr Keys direction arrives
safe, we shall be relieved from every difficulty wch we have for some
time laboured under.
We have not seen Mr Mollohon, but have not the least doubt his
honoring Mr Keys Order.
By Letters from the Marquis Fayette the 18th at Aliens Creek 22
miles from Richmond (where Lord Cornwallis was their encamped)
we are informed that the Marquis having been joined by Wayne,
some Rifle men & Militia, and being informed that Cornwallis was
marching towards Baron Steuben, He the Marquis by a forced March
got between his Lordship & the Baron which obliged the former to
change his rout and March to Richmond.
We are sorry that the 300 stand of Arms which were to be sent
off last tuesday by the board of War to Maryland, only goes this day,
we are promised that the others to the amount of 1500 including
the 200 sent & the 300 shall soon follow, the pressing demands from
Virga has prevented our coming in for our share sooner. You may
depend that we shall give every attention in our power to this object
'till it is fully obtained. Congress have not received any late infor-
mation either from Europe or the West Indies

[David Stewart, Baltimore to Coll Uriah Forrest] (favoured by
Mr. Sterrett)
I find by a letter from Mr Campbell to Mr William Taylor, (now
absent with the Troop Gone to the southward) that Col Ford has
seized some Goods in the hands of Mr Campbell the property of
Mr George Salmon Mr William Taylor and myself, which we sent
down for the purpose of bartering for Tobacco, which we wanted
at that place, and think it hard to be disapointed — particularly as on
Enquiry, I find the act of Assembly directing a Seizure, was only in
Case a Sufficient Quantity Could not be purchased to dispatch the
Troops now at Annapolis, and Col Smith informs me he has bought
Every thing requisite for the purpose here, as this is the Case hope
our Goods will be restored at once, that Our Intentions with respect
to the disposal of them, may be Carryed into Execution you will
much oblige me by applying to the Governor & Council for an Order
to Colo Ford, to restore what he may have Seized to Mr Campbell,
wou'd not ask this did the Service of the publick require them, but
