[Sam. Smith, Balt., to Gov. Lee.]

I was honor'd this Moment with your Excelly orders of yesterday.
All the Linen in Town that is proper for Tents is procur'd & I flatter
myself will be made on Saturday, say I Marque 18 Horsemens &
50 Com. Tents. These can meet the Troops at George Town. The
Camp Kettles will be done this Evening, which together with about
150 suits I will forward to morrow Morning to Mr Muir. I shall
be glad to know whether Mr Poe's Rect for the Tents will be satisfac-
tory, There are no Waggons yet procured for the Troops. I Have
Compleatly fitted 64 Men here which together with the 150 suits is
the 200 I promiStd. I Have deliver'd the Troops here near 50 Blankets
& have this Day provided about 70 more. 50 of these are to be sent
for 45 Miles where they had been sent for safety, they together with
such Things not furnish'd may be sent with the Tents.
Gen. Gist has applied to Mr Poe for a Marquee am I to Supply the
Linen. He proposes marching with the Detachment.

The within mentioned Prisoners I have sent under Gard to your
Care & beg your Assistance in Geting them to Snow Hill where they
mostly belong I took them on Sunday Last off Wats Island from
Pokomoke bound to Annemesik & from thence to Portsmouth by
Papers the Bearer will shew you youl find the Greatest Scene of
Vileney in Agation that Could Ever Commited by man & Perhaps if
had not been Timely Prevented would have Ruened that Part of the
Cuntry therefore I wish you to brine: them to Judgment or Retain
them in Confinement untill I am Redy to Go to Philadelphia

[Thomas Sprigg, Washington Coty, to the Council.]

Yours of the 21st I recd and take the Liberty of informing your
Honrs that your determination of havg the Special Court held at
Fredk for Trial of the Persons appred in this Coty has Occation'd
much Uneasiness amongst the Whigs of this place, they have taken
uncommon pains to bring them to Justice, and construe their being
sent to Fredk in the most unfavourable terms, they suppose its for
fear that a Jury can't be had hear that can be trusted, which I hope
was not the case for be Assur'd the Generallity of the People are as
well dispoStd to Punish the Offenders as they can be in any Coty not-
withstanding we have 100 now in Goal the Inhabitants has apply'd
to me to intercede with your Hons to have them try'd at Hagars
Town, and as their behaviour on this Occasion merits every Service
in my power, I must beg the favr of your honrs (if it is not incon-
sistant) to indulge them with an alteration in the order so far as
