Letter 106

[Josiah Polk, Salisbury, to The Honbe Matthew Tilghman, Esq,
President of ye Special Council, Talbot County]

From a very severe parixism of the Gout I am incapable of at-
tending the Council on Wednesday and cannot determine when I
shall be able to attend. Capt Walley makes a request of a supply of
three hundred yards of Canvas of two feet width and if of greater
or less width more or less Canvas proportionably, fifteen pound of
twine, four quire Cartridge paper, and two dozen Sail needles. The
Barge Protector in Worcester is almost finished, think it necessary
Commissions should be immediately applied for. Capt Walley rec-
ommends Captain Joseph Handy the Bearer hereof as his first Lieu-
tenant I approve of his choice and think the Gentleman adequate to
that trust. The Gentlemen Superintendants of the Virginia Galleys
propose selling part of the Tackle and Apparel at publick sale; would
wish Capt Walley receive instructions to purchase such Articles as
the Barge stands in immediate want of. Those Gentlemen seem dis-
posed to lend some other Articles which are not for sale provided
they could be assured by Council of having them replaced or paid for
in case of loss. It will be necessary Capt Walley be instructed rela-
tive the mode of inrolling the Men, what encouragement will be given
and the number of men to be enlisted. He thinks eighty men will do,
though she could carry a hundred.
