28 Letters to the Governor and Council

[H. Hollingsworth, Head of Elk, to the Governor & Council.]

And please your Excellency & Honours Inclosed is the receipts
for the Letters and Money forwarded by me to the several Gentle-
men as p your request, I'le thank you to have the money charged
to Mr Williamses Account, so that it may not come against me at a
future day, I thought it advisable to Inclose the receipts that you
might be fully Satisfied of the delivery, and of course the necessary
measures being adopted in time I have this day stopt one hundred
Barrels of Flour which was offered to be pasStd as Bank flour but
was not mark'd with (Bank) as it had usually been, (with blacking)

have acquainted * Messrs Smith & Mathews, f Broom & Johnson,
that if they will make me a Return of all the flour Bought or for-
warded on Bank a/e that this shall go on, which they have not yet
done, have therefore applyed to a Majistrate and got the flour Stored
where it will wait your orders, unless these proposals are comply'd
with as Mr Gilpin (the Majistrate) and myself are both of Opinion
it ought not to go forward, unless this State can have Credit, not
only for this, but all other flour Bought by the Bank Agents, will
thank for you for your directions on this matters

[Robt. F. Hooe, Alexandria, to Gov. Lee.]

By every account we have been able to collect, the Enemy about
Two thousand five hundred strong, under the Command of General
Arnold surprized and enter'd the Town of Richmond on friday 5th
Inst The Governor and Council with many others made their escape
but several of the Inhabitants in endeavouring to save their effects,
were made Prisoners, The small Arms light Cannon Powder and
Ball was moved, also the Records, but it is said the latter with the
Paper Money in the Treasury and the Plates, they followed into the
Country and took. The Arms and Ammunition it is believed is safe,
