I shall from promises made me Collect in this County near 50
Beef perhaps more they are not yet in Sufficient order, by the middle
of October I think they will do. Money is much wanted in this
County Wheat is selling for £30 pr Bushell in this Coty flower
about £100 p lb in Philadelphia those articles I can get none of
unless I am permitted to give as high as the purchasers in the
Delaware & Pensyla deducting the Expense of transportation, an
argument the people make use of is, that they ought to reap some
advantage on account of their Situation being nearer the Market,
therefore the great price of freight from the lower Cotys in this
State is saved, which if added to the price I offer wou'd be got If
I can get money some wheat can be now got on Susquehanna
for £25 to the amount of four or five thousand Bushells, which
cannot be had without it, money I must have also for the Beef.
The new Emissions I shall meet with some difficulty at first in
passing I have partly Contracted for 70 Barrells of old flower which
only waits tor an inspection, it possible 1 shall immediately inform
you by the Post as that will be the readiest way I can send
Only let me have Cash and you may rest assuredly that no in-
deavour shall be wanting in me to Comply with your request very
largely, if a little addition could be made to the price of Wheat &
Flower
Note I have just taken a ride thro this County in every Quarter
of it

[J. Randall Petersburg!! to His Excellency Thomas Sim Lee Esqr]

Sir I have just arriv'd here from Hillsborough where the Mary-
land Troops are encamp'd since the retreat from Camden. I am
endeavouring to send them some Clothing and Stores, but find great
difficulty in procuring Waggons I have waited on Governor Jeffer-
son at Richmond and no plan can be fallen upon to get them here.
I beg leave to propose to your Excellency to have provided as soon
as Possible four or five Close cover'd Waggons with good horses
and Drivers, for the purpose of transporting clothing and Stores to
Camp, they may then be sent regular and Safe from Wet or Plun-
der from which the greatest Care on my part (hitherto could not
prevent
Unless this method is adopted there is no probability of sending
even the stores I now have on hand to the Troops who are in a dis-
tressed situation. The whole of their Baggage lost not even the
Officers have a change of linnen. Inclos'd is a return of what I have
on hand to send them. Likewise a list of the officers who have
Receiv'd from me the Money advanced by the State. The Rapid
March of the Troops in a country where no post is established put it
out of my power to send it sooner. The Balance of the Specie I have
