not attending his Duty as a Militia Man according to the Summons
or order of his Officer issued some Time in April last, that he has
a wife, several helpless Children and a very old infirm Grandmother
depending on his Labours for Support, that he has very little Property
except a small Parcel of Land which is taken executed and advertised
to be sold that the said Lands will sell for not much more than the
Fine and Costs, and that he will be deprived of the Means of provid-
ing for his Family, We think the Fine considering the Mans Circum-
stances very grievous and excessive and regret the want of Power
to mitigate it, and therefore request you will suspend the Sale until he
has an opportunity of laying his Case before the Assembly and apply-
ing for Relief.

You are to proceed down the Bay at least as far as the Mouth of
Patuxent River and keep frequently stretching across and down the
Bay so as to have a constant look out; if you discover any of the
Enemies Vessels standing up the Bay of Force and may appear to
you to have Troops on Board, you will return and give the earliest
Information thereof, and whenever you have an Opportunity you
will write us, where you are and communicate the Intelligence
collected. Signal agreed upon, the Plater will upon viewing a Vessel
hoist a white Flag at the main Top mast head and lower the Peek
of the Mainsail to answer the signal to hawl down the Foresail
