[Council to Gen'1 Smallwood.]

We are sending the Boat Plater Capt. Middleton to Patuxent tc
bring up some Provision from thence. If you will be so obliging a?
to furnish ten or twelve Men, it will be of singular Service in secur-
ing the Boat and Provisions from any Attempt of the Enemy's
Barges. This is wrote at the Governor's Request

[Council to Capt. Nicholas Ruxton Moore.]

We were favored with your Letter of the 21st Instant and approve
of your Conduct in not obeying the requests of general Weeder
before you had an Order, considering the particular and critical
Situation of the State of Virginia at this Time invaded by a very
powerful Army composed of a considerable Body of cavalry and
four or five thousand Invantry, we think our Safety and the Duty we
owe a Sister State call on us to afford the Marquis what Aid we
can and our Conviction that the Horse under your Command will
be very useful and render great and emminent Service induces us to
order you to inarch immediately into Virginia, and put yourself under
the Command of the Marquis and so remain until our further Order
is communicated to you. It will be proper to have all the Horses
valued by indifferent and skilful Persons and the Valuations trans-
mitted to this Board to be laid before the general Assembly, who we
doubt not, will make full Compensation to those whose Horses are
killed or injured, Genl Smallwood has spared us eight Camp Kettles
which we now send you.
