[Council to Thomas Sprigg, Esqr.]

Being informed that you have some continental Arms that want
repair, we request that you will have them, and all others carefully
and expeditiously repaired, to defray this necessary Expence you
shall either have Orders on this Treasury or the Collector of Wash-
ington County, or in any other convenient Manner that the State
can accomplish.

As it will be necessary to draw a large Body of Men to a Point, if
the threatened Invasion of this State should take place, we request
you to order the Select Militia of your County to march immediately
to this City, from whence they may be marched to any Place where
their Services may be required. You will have them as well armed
as Circumstances will admit.

[Council to Delegates in Congress.]

We are credibly informed that several Merchants in Philadelphia
have a large Quantity of Arms in their Possession and that they may
be had for Flour or Tobacco, should this be the Case we beg Leave
to Solicit your Attention to this Business and request you will con-
tract for as many as can he obtained, which we will engage to pay for
in either of those Articles. You will be pleased to forward them im-
mediately to the Head of Elk, from which Place we can easily have
them conveyed, where they may be required. We wish to have at
least one Thousand Stand.

Monday 4th June 1781

Ordered that the western shore Treasurer pay to Daniel Munro
forty Pounds fifteen shillings due him per Account passed by the
Depy And.
That the said Treasurer pay to Samuel Smith Esqr three hundred
and fourteen hhds of Tobacco, such as will answer his purpose to be
expended in procuring Cloathing for the Troops of this State for
which he is to be accountable.
That James Calhoun Esqr Commissary Genl for the western shore
deliver to Samuel Smith Esqr two thousand five hundred Barrels of
Merchantable flour to be by him expended in procuring Cloathing as
above mentd on Accot
That Henry Hollingsworth Esqr Commissary General for the
Eastern shore deliver to Samuel Smith Esqr one thousand five hun-
dred Barrels of Merchantable Flour to be expended as above directed
and Accounted for.
