400 Proceedings and Correspondence

April 14
Liber No. 78
p. 130

necessary at this Time to have any Guards posted on the North Side
of Patapsco as the Enemy are down the Bay, but would have them
armed and in Readiness to act at a moments warning, certainly there
will be sufficient Notice given of the Approach of the Enemy for the
Militia to be prepared to receive them. If there is good Cause to
suspect particular Persons in Baltimore Town or County of Dis-
affection to the Government or the Militia or any of them will point
them out and communicate the Grounds of their Suspicion to this
Board and we should think them sufficient to justify an Exertion
of the extraordinary Powers vested in us by the Law for the Safety
of the State. We will most chearfully and readily take the proper
Measures for their Appehension and Confinement

[Council to Richard Dallam, Esq.]

From a representation made to this Board by Genl Gist that the
recruits ought to be drawn together as soon as possible to be in-
structed in their Duty, we are induced to depart from the Law and
to order them from the Counties, in which they were enlisted before
they are cloathed and at the same Time that there might be no Com-
plaints to promise and engage that they should not be marched from
the Places appointed for their rendezvous, until they be cloathed
agreeable to the Law; we hope such Promise and Engagement will
fully remove every obstacle to the Recruits from your County march-
ing to Baltimore Town the Place of Rendezvous. We have given
orders to Capt. Keeports to supply you with two Kegs of musquet
Powder, it is out of our Power to order any lead to you probably
you may be able to procure some in your County, we would have you
purchase Sufficient for your wants if it can be obtained. You will
take two filled Pieces of Mr Hughs upon the Terms he offers, we
think they will be fully sufficient for your County. The paper sent
you, which you returned contained Instructions to seize Provisions,
Similar Instructions having been sent to the other Counties of this
State, we desire you to put them into Execution immediately, and
to make use of the Provision in furnishing those Militia who may
be on Duty, who are not able to provide for themselves, those who
