Shore have also presented, where I find a prior subsisting order to
him from your Excellency to transmit to the Western Shore Treas-
ury the money immediately on his receiving to the Amount of
£10000 that I have little prospect of getting money there, unless I
could be at the Treasury Office at the time of his receiving it, nor
does he think he should be justified in paying it even then, shall keep
the order for your farther directions.
I have contracted for several Horses, and were I furnished with
money could very soon procure the whole number required of this
County. The prices are various from £1500 to £2500 and a differ-
ence from 10 to 25 pr Cent between ready money and Certificates,
especially such as you directed me to give, it being conceived they
will not answer the purpose of paying the Tax. Inclos'd you have
a List of the Horses I have at present contracted for, the Money to
be paid on the Delivery of them, I think they will very well answer
the purpose they are intended for. The Horse belonging to Mr
Sprigg has been in this County for some time past, I contracted to
pay him £1800 Cash if I liked the Horse, I have received him, must
therefore request your Excellency to give Mr Sprigg an order for
the Money charging me with it, if the Money could not be immedi-
ately paid him, He would take a Certificate for £2000, which I think
makes too great difference in the Price. I hope you will furnish me
with money as soon as you conveniently can to enable me to comply
with my Contracts and to finish my purchase.
I have received of Mr Henry Hollyday a Nonjuror of this County
three Horses, and expect in a few days to receive five or six more
from other Nonjurors, please to inform me how I am to dispose of
them, and such as I may purchase when I get a number together.
I have used my utmost endeavours to procure such Provisions as
are immediately wanted, but find no person willing to contract at
the Prices you have limited me to. The general expectation here for
Wheat is 10s per Bushel or the exchange of 60 for one, but I be-
lieve it may be got at £25. Mr Hemsley will not take less than five
Dollars new Money or £75 Contl for his flour.

[Willim Grayson, By order of the Board, War Office to His Excy
Governor Lee]
Sir The Board do themselves the honor to inform you that they
are directed by Congress to make contracts for a very considerable
quantity of shot & shells to be furnished at a short period
In order to carry into execution the intentions of Congress, the
Board have sent Capt Joy, into your State for the purpose of engag-
ing as many of the furnaces in the public service, as shall be in his
power. As the Board have understood that some of the owners of
these works reside in England, from which it is probable their
Agents in this Country, will be unwilling to engage in a business of
