No. 24
P. 5

[Council to James Calhoun, Esqr.]

The urgent and pressing Necessity we are under of procuring
an immediate supply of Continental Money, to pay a very large Debt
contracted in Virginia, impels us to reiterate our Solicitations to
you, to dispose of the State Tobacco in your Hands for the best
Price you can get, in that Money. A Letter we received yesterday
from Governor Jefferson, authorizes us to inform you that there is
the greatest Probability to presume the Enemy has left the Bay.
This, we understand, was the only very considerable Obstacle that
prevented a Sale hitherto. You will excuse the Trouble we give you,
when you reflect how much the Credit and Interest of the State is
concerned.
