prevail on all the recruits I can, to lend part of their money to the
state, this will be a good security against desertion, If money is bor-
rowed in this way. I suppose it will be necessary to put it into the
treasury to obtain certificates, which puts it out of our Power to use
it spedily in the recruiting way, your Excellency will direct what is
proper to be done, As we are extremely busy in the recruiting way
I shall not have it in my power to return a list of the Arms &c in a
short time, I have about one hundred arms well cleaned & shall have
the rest done as soon as I can; some old tents I shall have also re-
pair'd. I suppose the greatest dispatch is necessary in forming the
new Battalion & that the first men raised will be applied to that pur-
pose concerning which, I suppose you will give me orders.

Dear Sir Inclosed you have a State of your Acct with me Re-
specting the Goods belonging to the French Gentn who will take his
departure from this Continent in a few days & is very much distrest
for want of his money Capt. Key-Polt Informs me that he has orders
to pay this Battl from the Sales of some Articles belonging to the
State, but as they are all unsaleable there is but little Probability of
his raising any money from that Quarter, I therefore Request you
will please make provision for this Battl & If you can pay Mr Frank
Luke his Thousand Pounds when he Calls for it wch will be very
soon, & send the Ballance in money by the first Good oppty say
Mr Dorsey you will much Oblige
