of the Council of Maryland. 173

[Joseph Wilkinson, Mouth of Potomack to His Excellency
Thomas Sim Lee]

Sir I have this moment the Honor of receiving your excellencies
Letters of 8th Instant prior to which I had ordered such part of the
Militia on duty & at such places as appeared to be the most neces-
sary, and agreeable to your orders shall continue so long as their
appears a necessity. The enemy came into Patuxent River on Sun-
day evening last in force, from the best Intelligence I can collect,
three arm'd Schooners one with 8 and 6 & one 4 Guns supposed to
be 3 & 4 Pounders Swivells & small arms, they proceeded up as far
as Point Patience about 4 miles up the River, and there landed &
took possession of Mr John Parrans house where they brought
their Cannon & continued there till Tuesday Morning Sun rise when
they Burnt the House & furniture & went on board after taking
several negroes & what stock they cou'd collect, which was but
little, & took two Vessells loaded with Tobacco about 80 hhds. they
then proceeded down the River opposite to Col Fitzhughs, where
they sent a flagg on shore requesting a supply of fresh Provisions,
that they meant to do no damage on shore if comply'd with, their
request was rejected, upon which they immediately Cannonaded the
House & in a short time sent two Barges on Shore with about forty
men under their Cannon & Burnt the Colonels House, they then pro-
ceeded a few miles out of the River where they still continue. I have
appointed Guards both on the Bav & River & have taken every pre-
caution I can to prevent their Landing & doing further mischief. I
wou'd on their landing advised you but Colonel Fitzhugh informed
me he had sent an express for that purpose.
I am to inform your Excellency that while the enemy lay up the
River that James Lawder a son of the Revd Mr Lawders. and a
Andrew Willson formerly a Taylor in Baltimore Town, & tis said an
old offender, went on board of them without permission & continued
with them one night under a pretence of looking for negroes & on
their return the next day pretended they were forcibly detained, from
many Circumstances it appears that they gave the enemy such Intelli-
gence which liked to proved very serious by the Capture of our
Guard, they are now in Custody, time would not permit of any thing
further being done but shall immediately deliver them over to the
Civil power.
