of the Council of Maryland. 137

[Dan'1 Jenifer, Pot0, to Gov. Lee]

Sir I had the honor of your Excys Ltre of the 28th Ulto together
with the mony sent for the purchasing of provisions for the Army,
1000 sheets too many were sent 25 being put into each quire but
those shall be accounted for.
Your Excy & the Council were heretofore informed that the 15th
of this month was the day prefixed for receiving Neat Cattle in five
days after that time I hope to have the Major part in a drive towds
the head of Elk. The wheat I shall begin to receive next week and
a few days will finish the business. I have now to request of Your
Excy to supercede my Commission as Register of Wills in this
County, and that you will be so obliging as to appt Walter Hanson
Esqr the late Register to that office, as he is better qualified and will
give more satisfaction, than any Gent I know in the County. This
requisition is made by my being Elected to serve as a delegate in
the next Assembly If Mr W. Hanson Junr the Contractor for horses
hands were filled I believe that he wou'd soon compleat his number,
as he is Remarkably industrious and diligent, would make you a
good Commissary of purchases when my time expires which will
be at the end of this month. I hope that Yr Excy will excuse this hasty
and unintellgt Scrawl as I've had a Seven weeks Task.

[Henry Schnebely, Contr. for Waggons & teams, Hagars Town,
to the Council]

Gentn Since the rect of your order on the Sheriff of this County
I have purchased 4 Waggons and Eighteen Horses & expect shall
be able to fit out 4 or 5 teams by the time I get your answer to this
Letter as there is a quantity of Linen in Col. Shryocks hands pur-
chased under the direction of Mr Calhoon of Baltimore for the Pub-
lick if you think proper to give me an order for it I can have Covers
& Bags made to each waggon, without which they ought not to be
sent off it will be difficult for me to hire waggoners to drive the
Waggons to the head of Elk, if I can have receits for them at Balti-
more I think I cod readily get men to take them to that place, and
with your concurence can Load them with Continental flour pur-
chased by myself & other Comsrs which remains here to be for-
warded, and probably the grain collected by tax will want a Convey-
ance, if you deem it expedient these teams may make two or three
trips to Baltimore in that business, there is also old Indian Corn &
Rye which was purchased by the Comrs & some brand in different
Mills in this County the Corn & Rye might likewise be sent to Bal-
timore or the Rye distilled for the Soldiery if you think proper,
the purchases I have made amount to f 24962 & have recd of Col.
Stull £750 his subscription to the Loan & from the Sheriff in pr of
your order £1747.. 10. which is all expended in Small sums paid each
