Mr. John Selbey, the Sheriff, has died and Mr. Bennett, the alter-
nate, declines the office, The appointment of Edward Vandame is
recommended (Endorsement: " Commission issued October 2 ")

[Joseph Dashiell Snowhill to Gov Lee]

Sir I am extremely sorry to Inform you that the Enemys boats
have Been Twenty miles up our Rivers and Has Burned a fine Brig-
gentine of MesssRobt Dashiell & Henry one and several other
small Vessels, and have plundered several of the Inhabitants: and
not withstanding Several Guards ordered out upon Duty I am afraid
they will not be restrained Except we had some Armed Boats. I am
inform'd that Sundry of Our people has had a hand in our Mis-
fortune, should be Glad of an Order from yr Excellency, to Carry
them or any of them that may be found Gilty Before the Govr & Co
as I am Convinced that nothing will be done with them heare Our
Militia is very Tardy and many of them Refuse to Turn out: sum
thing from your Excellency on that head will be absolutely Nese-
sary: I shall forward the Cattle as soon as I Can get them Colected,
am sorry to Inform you that Very few will take the new money:
I have never yet heard of the Arm'd Boats, if they had Ever Come
into the sound I Believe no misfortune would have happened to the
Inhabitants, we have several Vessels Loaded with Corn and pork
and Cant send them out, for those Whale Boats; I am Convinced
that if a Stop is not put to the progress, that our people will rebe'
especialy, the Disafected: the Enemy the Day they Burn'd the Vese
at Vienna did Colo Henry more then £30, as Damage
N B. A number of Negros have gone on Board them.

[Pat. Sim Smith, Calvert to His Excellency Thomas Sim Lee Esqr.

Sir Inclosed are notes for 3 Hogsheads of Tobacco at Pile's
warehouse in Charles County paid me by Colo Fitzhugh for his sub
scription as a loan to the State. The other Subscriptions I have no
received but have promises of their being paid shortly Mr Freelands
who having sold a Horse to Mr Jones the purchaser in this County
for Tobacco is desirous of having his Subscription discounted.
Colo Fitzhugh is now Collecting the wheat I have purchased anc
promises to have it manufactured Immediately, He will also Collec
of some Gentlemen who have engaged me flour, and manufacture
it for them. I flater myself I shall shortly be able to render an Ac
count of what flour we shall have ready.
